Switching Auto Insurance Company's

The process for canceling an auto insurance policy and getting started with a new one is fairly simple. While there may be slight differences in the process from company to company, the steps will typically include following:

  • Get instant auto insurance rate quotes online to identify your auto insurance options.
  • Inform your current insurer in writing. In the written notice, include the date you want the coverage to end.
  • If you are already signed up with a new plan, the new auto insurance agent should also notify the previous agent of the change. In some states, this is required.
  • Some auto insurers may ask the consumer to return the printed policy plan their received.
  • The Insurer will then send a form for cancellation request to the consumer.
  • Sign and date the form and examine it to ensure the information is correct, and then return it.
  • Stay in touch with the former insurance agent to check the status of your case.
  • Avoid walking away from a plan, expecting it to take care of itself and cancel. You may wind up with unpaid bills and a poor mark on your credit rating.
  • An insurance company that does not receive a written notification of your cancellation but does not receive payment may report you to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Make sure to have a new auto insurance policy in place before canceling your former policy. Even a gap in protection for one day can lead to problems. States require motorists to have at least liability coverage for auto insurance. The new insurer will work with you to time the start of the new policy to coincide with the prior coverage cancellation.
